State of FLORIDA
Department of Juvenile Justice
Interoffice Memorandum
DATE: September 5, 2003
TO:John Tallon, Regional Director Viki Burnett,
Judy Haynes,
Charles Chervanik, Assistant Secretary
FROM: Oliver Jones, Superintendent, and Pensacola Boys Base
SUBJECT: TOUGH CHOICES, beyond Anger Management
Pensacola Boys Base was given an opportunity by Dr. Linda H. Ford of Worldview Publishing, Inc., Tampa, Florida to view the subject program based in cognitive behavior and reality. The program is OUTSTANDING!
It consists of four (4) tapes, (1) CD and a 291-page course book loaded with powerful problem solving, conflict resolution and anger management activity sheets designed for youth of all ages and comprehension levels. It is also user friendly, which will allow for any staff to act as a facilitator with little or no training.
My initial review and screening of the program was performed along with selected residents for four hours. Two hours before and after lunch. The youth routinely have physical education (PE) after lunch but they were so excited about the material that they demanded to be allowed to forgo PE and continue the review process through the end.
Across the board, the program highlights self esteem/self respect, respect for others, cooperation, responsibility, self control, victim awareness, goal setting, problem solving and all the basic social skills we generally focus on inside the residential setting that enhance our youth ability to cope with stress, anger and other forms of conflict. It serves as a great supplement and reinforces our Restorative Justice course.
Needless to say, I am extremely excited about having a course that drives all the desired values we want to pass on to our youth straight to them in a manner that grabs and holds their attention. One youth responded by saying this will shock you into reality.
As superintendent of one of our residential comment programs, I would be derelict in the performance of duties if I did not bring this wonderful program to your immediate attention. I am also prepared to brief you on it at your convenience.
The bottom line is, it's one every program in the State of Florida should have. We all need to speak the same language to our youth, regardless to what program or school they go to.

I just received your TOUGH CHOICES package to preview - I'm sold.
This Tough Choices program is the best I have purchased and believe you me, I have just about every program available.
Question: The CD included in the package (Relaxation, Centering, and Affirmation Tracks) is also one of the best that truly is usable with teens. Can this CD be purchased separately for I would like to have a few on hand, in my clinic for teens to use during group therapy. Please call me and let me know as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
Dolli Hutchinson

about TOUGH CHOICES
Tough Choices by Dr. Linda Ford is an excellent life skills program for young people. Teens and adults alike can relate to the series. The materials are essential for a complete skills program for "at promise" Youth. I highly recommend Dr. Ford's work to those working with adolescents.
